Kristine Ericson, a recent graduate of Williams College and a Fulbright grantee in art and architectural history, has been selected to receive the 2010-11 Lois Roth award.

Ms. Ericson has been researching the work of influential Norwegian architect Sverre Fehn at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim (NTNU). She is particularly interested in his theories about the visual relationships between architecture and landscape elements. While in Norway, Ericson has been able to combine academic study with hands-on experience as part of an urban design group that is developing proposals for the redevelopment of the NTNU campus.

Ericson plans to use her Lois Roth award to fund an extended study trip within western Europe to analyze architecture and its interactions with the natural and built environment. She has developed an interest in ecological sustainability and hopes to observe eco-friendly design solutions during her trip.

The Lois Roth Endowment provides awards to strengthen international understanding in a way that honors the life and work of the woman it is named for. Roth was a Fulbright alumna and cultural diplomat. She cared greatly about the arts and humanities, and formed strong bonds with several Nordic countries. A Lois Roth award is given to one US Fulbright student in Norway every year.
