
Application Timeline
Applying for a Fulbright grant to Norway is an intensive process which requires not only formulating an original research proposal (unless one is an ETA or Roving Scholar applicant), but also securing an affiliation. While dates in the application process fluctuate from year to year, the following timeline is intended to offer both suggested guidelines for completing the Fulbright application process and useful information regarding how the process unfolds up until one arrives in Norway as a grantee.
8 - 12 months before deadline
- Begin to think about research ideas and the logistics for undertaking research in Norway
- Familiarize yourself with Norway's universities, colleges, and research organizations, make a list of people you could contact about working on your proposed project
Summer/Fall before deadline
- Having formulated a feasible research project, write your proposal and personal statement
- Connect with your university fellowship office or other relevant department in order to get feedback on your application and proposal
- Contact potential affiliations in Norway about your proposal and confirm their willingness to work with you during a potential Fulbright stay
- If you are a student applying through your home university, submit materials for internal review by posted deadlines
Deadline
- Submit all materials via the electronic application on the Fulbright website
December - January
- Applications approved by CIES or IIE are forwarded to the U.S.-Norway Fulbright Foundation and applicants receive notification regarding the status of their application
January - February
- Arctic Chair finalist applicants are contacted for interviews via Skype
- Roving Scholar finalist applicants are contacted for interviews via Skype
- ETA finalist applicants are contacted for interviews via Skype
March - April
- U.S. Norway Fulbright Foundation selects applicants to be awarded grants (competition statistics here)
- Pending FSB approval, selected applicants are notified that they have been awarded a Fulbright grant to Norway
August
- Fulbright student grantees, ETAs, and scholars with grants starting in August begin their term in Norway by attending an orientation
seminar in Oslo.
