History
This program follows on the success of the 2009 Summer Institute for Norwegian Students in the Sciences, which brought together
undergraduate students in the natural sciences together on topics related to the International Polar Year.

Participant Profile
Norwegian undergraduate students with a demonstrated interest in climate change and/or sustainability issues. Participants
may have a science or policy background. Commissions are encouraged to recruit a diverse group of candidates.
Organization
Similar to the Institutes hosted by Drexel and Bentley University, this program will include an academic, cultural, and site
visit component. The University of Minnesota is also prepared to offer English language tutorials.
Program Goals
Broadly, the Institute’s goals for the participants will be:
- To learn from experts about the latest research and theories on climate change and environmental sustainability
- To demonstrate how the above research findings and theories are connected to their own studies and research
- Engage in thought-provoking interaction regarding global warming.
Share practical solutions from their disciplinary and personal perspectives regarding climate change
- To experience how American business are promoting environmental sustainability through their work
- Practice presenting research findings to the general public.
Develop on-going relationships with a diverse community of faculty and students and community members
- To understand and experience the United States and its diversity
- Presentations on the relationship between science and policy and law are also being developed
Menu of Activities
In addition to organizing site visits and activities with a few of the organizations below, the University of Minnesota will
organize visits to organizations promoting sustainability through their work, including organic farms, food cooperatives,
and small business ventures.
Eligibility Requirements
- Individuals interested in participating in the 2010 Summer Institute for Outstanding European Students on Climate Change and
SUstainability must meet the following eligibility requirements. Applicants must:
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate study in the natural sciences (fields of study include biology, chemistry,
earth sciences, and physics)
- Be highly proficient or fluent in English
- Have a demonstrated interest interest in climate change and/or sustainability issues
- Be able to participate in the program in its entirety
be committed to returning to their home university in the fall of 2010
- Have a sustained high level of academic achievement, as indicated by academic grades, awards, and recommendations
- Be willing and able to participate fully in the Institute academic program, including attending all sessions, completing all
assignments, and contributing to classroom discussions
- Be a Norwegian citizen (participants with a dual citizenship: Norwegian/American, may not apply)

Awards will cover all participant costs.
Application Process
The application deadline is
April 15, 2010 (new!). Finalists will be notified in May 2010. Individuals from a broad range of ethnic, religious, geographic, and socio-economic

here. Along with the application form, applicants must submit certified copies of their grades and/or transcripts, and two letters
of reference. The letters of reference should be sent directly from the referent to the Fulbright Office in Oslo.
Selected semi finalists will be asked to attend an interview conducted in English. Questions about the program should be directed
