Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government has established the Kistefos Public Service Fellowship Fund and it will be funded through a donation of more than $1 million from Kistefos AS. The funding will support at least two students per year at the Kennedy School through the 2012-13 academic year.

The objective of the fund is to further the development of a professional class of public leaders who will contribute to efficient and effective government and help leverage the public stewardship of national wealth in Norway.

“The Kennedy School prides itself as being the most international school at Harvard whose student body spans cultures, sectors and disciplines, and the Kistefos Public Service Fellowship will only further our mission to train public leaders who are seeking to work for the public good in countries throughout the world,” said David Ellwood, dean of the school.

“John F. Kennedy School of Government is recognized as one of the world’s leading education institutions for public leadership. With the significant Norwegian public sector, it is important that our public leader candidates have access to the world’s best knowledge environment”, said Christen Sveaas, chairman of Kistefos AS.

Individuals supported by the Kistefos Fund are known as Kistefos Fellows and may enroll in Kennedy School degree programs to earn a Master in Public Policy (MPP), Two-year Master in Public Administration (MPA2), Master in Public Administration/International Development (MPA/ID), or Mid-Career Master in Public Administration (MC/MPA). The Kistefos Fund can support student tution, fees and living expenses.

Who can apply for the Kistefos Fellowship?

Qualified individuals from Norway are encouraged to apply for admission to the Kennedy School. In awarding Kistefos Fellowships to admitted applicants, consideration is given to the candidates' capacity to lead, commitment to improving governance, academic proficiency, professional experience, leadership potential, demonstrated financial need, and their potential to make significant, positive difference when they return to their country. Graduates of the Oslo Handelsgymnasium (Oslo School of Business & Economics) are especially encouraged to apply.

The Kistefos Public Service Fellowship Fund will support student tuition, fees and living expenses. Candidates who accept the Fellowship will be required to sign a commitment letter obligating them to serve their home country in a public service capacity for at least three years following their graduation.

As a professional graduate school at Harvard University, the Kennedy School of Government maintains an abiding commitment to advancing the public interest by training skilled, enlightened leaders and solving public problems through world-class scholarship and active engagement with practitioners and decision makers.
