
Human dignity - a universal concept?
On December 9 there will be a seminar commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Professor Glenn Hughes, 2008-09 Fulbright Scholar to Norway, is the principal speaker. The seminar is organized by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters; the Centre for the Study of Mind in Nature (CSMN); and the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO).

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is premised on the idea that all uman beings have an inherent dignity. But what
does that mean? 60 years ater, scholars and practitioners still eagerly debate this thorny and mportant question.
There will be an introductory address by:
- Professor Glenn Hughes, St. Mary's University (San Antonio), currently Fulbright Scholar at PRIO: Dignity as Fragile - Dignity as Absolute.
followed by shorter interventions from:
- Professor Carola Freiin von Villiez, University of Oslo: Human Dignity and Democratic Participation
