Designed to provide short-term academic opportunities (grant lengths range from two to six weeks) for U.S. faculty and professionals, the Fulbright Specialists Program is one of several Fulbright initiatives administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES).

Marjorie Schaffer came to Norway as a Fulbright Scholar in 2005. The research she conducted led to a book. The connections she made led to collaboration with Norwegian colleagues and return trips to Oslo as a Fulbright Specialist.

As part of its international scientific exchange effort, the Fulbright Specialists Program has awarded Carnegie scientist Marilyn Fogel a grant to share the most up-to-date findings in the fields of astrobiology and biogeochemistry with staff and students at the Physics of Geological Processes, University of Oslo, Norway, taking part in the Arctic Mars Analogue Svalbard Expedition (AMASE).
