The Fulbright Arctic Chair Award for a Distinguished Norwegian Scientist to Conduct Research in the USA

A Fulbright Arctic Chair Award is available for researchers in fields related to polar and high north issues, including (but not limited to) Geology, Biology, Geophysics, Engineering and Environmental Science for the 2011-12 academic year.

A similar award has been advertised for an American lecturer/researcher to conduct research in Norway.

Application deadline: November 30, 2010.

Grant Activity: Research component (may include lecturing) in collaboration with a host university of the candidate’s choice, in fields related to polar and high north issues. Conduct research on scholarly issues. In addition, the Chair is expected to engage with faculty inside and outside the institution, give public lectures, hold seminars, supervise Master’s and Ph.D. candidates with their research and writing, as well as mentoring.

Additional Qualifications: Ph.D. within academic fields related to polar and high north issues, and 5-10 years of experience.

Location: Any accredited U.S. university to be selected by the applicant.  A letter of invitation is required from the host university.

Length of Grant: 6-7 months within the academic year 2011-12.  Grantee can decide on one term or two terms. The start date has to be agreed upon jointly between grantee and the host institution.

Award details: This award provides NOK 100 000 per month for a 6-7 month grant, covering maintenance and housing. This Fulbright funding will be offered for a maximum of 7 months, but the grantee may stay beyond the 7-month Fulbright grant period. There is no financial support for dependents but family members may accompany grantee to the site.

Travel/Relocation: A set amount of NOK 30 000 for round-trip international travel is available for the grantee only. The grant period may be split in two, but no extra transatlantic travel funding will be provided. In addition, expenses will be covered towards attending seminars and participation in the Science Week conference in the U.S.
