Inaugural Meeting of Arctic Chairs in Oslo
On June 10, 2010 the Fulbright office hosted a meeting with the 2010-11 Arctic Chairs. Drs. Alvar Braathen and Mark Hermanson will serve as Arctic Chairs from Norway and the US respectively during the first year of this four-year pilot program.
The Fulbright Arctic Chair is part of the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Programs. Awards in this program are viewed as among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program. While in town, Braathen and Hermanson took the opportunity to meet with Fulbright board members and staff. They learned more about their responsibilities as Chairs, shared their research plans, and discussed ways to build a strong program.
Dr. Braathen will conduct his research at Utah State University on faults and CO2 leakage.
Dr. Hermanson will be based at the University Centre on Svalbard conducting research on contaminants in ice cores from Svalbard.
The US-Norway Fulbright Foundation is excited about the promising work of these two distinguished professors and the groundwork
they will lay for future chairs.
The application process for the 2011-12 Arctic Chair program is now open. The deadline for US applicants is August 1, while
the deadline for Norwegian applicants in October 1st. Click here for application information for candidates from the US. Click here for information for Norwegian applicants.
