2008-09 U.S. Fulbright Grantees to Norway - Students

Mr. Marcus Benjamin EICHENBERG

Category: Graduate student
Period of stay: 2008-09
Norwegian Affiliation: University of Oslo
Field: Law
Purpose of grant: Norway, as a leader in greenhouse gas regulation, represents an important opportunity for California and the United States to learn about climate change adaptation and prevention strategies. Efforts to find climate change solutions have been hampered in the United States by dispersed responsibility and disparate regulatory systems. Marcus Eichenberg will use his experience with environmental regulation in California to facilitate an information exchange aiming to predict future trends, pinpoint inefficiencies, highlight effective strategies, and aid in the implementation of efficient future regulation.

Public Health
Purpose of grant: I  will be studying health promotion philosophy and research methodology at the University of Bergen. I will also be working with the Research Centre for Health Promotion and investigating current health trends and attitudes in Norwegian adolescents. Upon my return to the US, I plan to compare my research findings from the Norwegian population with the US adolescent student population. My ultimate goal in this research is to work on developing better ways in which to reach adolescent populations with guidelines on healthy living and instill the desire for healthy nutrition practices.

2008-09 U.S. Fulbright Grantees to Norway - Students

Mr. Charles Isaac KALISH

Category: Graduate student
Period of stay: 2008-09
Norwegian Affiliation: University of Oslo
Field: Language and Literature
Purpose of grant: My research project will focus on two basic ecocritical readings of Henrik Ibsen's oeuvre: (1) Ibsen's use of environmental themes and natural landscapes and symbols to explore concepts of wilderness, humankind's relationship to nature and national identity; and (2) the significance of Ibsen's work to modern environmental theory, practices and problems.  My goals are to provide insight into an environmentally enlightened, or Green, dimension of Ibsen's work, which was originally intended by the author and has been largely underrepresented in literary criticism, and to recontextualize his writing within a historical framework of Norwegian and American cultural relationships to the environment.  I will conduct my research at the University of Oslo's Center for Ibsen Studies and take Norwegian courses through the University's Scandinavian Studies program.
Most recent degree/affiliation: B.A., University of California, Santa Barbara, CA

2008-09 U.S. Fulbright Grantees to Norway - Students

Ms. Ivy Ellen MCDANIEL

Category: Graduate student
Period of stay: 2008-09
Norwegian Affiliation: Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology
Field: Biology
Purpose of grant: For my Fulbright grant, I will conduct research at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology in Bergen, Norway. I will study the evolution and function of Hox genes in vertebrates, using the tunicate (an organism near the base of the chordate lineage) as a model system. Hox genes are involved in laying out the major body plan of animals. Studying the evolution of these important genes at the organismal juncture of vertebrates and chordates should give insight on how vertebrates evolved.
