Mr. Marcus Benjamin EICHENBERG
Category: Graduate student Period of stay: 2008-09 Norwegian Affiliation: University of Oslo Field: Law Purpose of grant: Norway, as a leader in greenhouse gas regulation, represents an important opportunity for California and the United States
to learn about climate change adaptation and prevention strategies. Efforts to find climate change solutions have been hampered
in the United States by dispersed responsibility and disparate regulatory systems. Marcus Eichenberg will use his experience
with environmental regulation in California to facilitate an information exchange aiming to predict future trends, pinpoint
inefficiencies, highlight effective strategies, and aid in the implementation of efficient future regulation. Most recent degree/affiliation: J.D, Hastings College of the Law

Ms. Emily Alden FISHER
Category: Graduate student Period of stay: 2008-09 Norwegian Affiliation: University of Bergen Field: Public Health Purpose of grant: I will be studying health promotion philosophy and research methodology at the University of Bergen. I will also be working
with the Research Centre for Health Promotion and investigating current health trends and attitudes in Norwegian adolescents.
Upon my return to the US, I plan to compare my research findings from the Norwegian population with the US adolescent student
population. My ultimate goal in this research is to work on developing better ways in which to reach adolescent populations
with guidelines on healthy living and instill the desire for healthy nutrition practices. Most recent degree/affiliation: MA, Gordon College

Mr. Matthew Lee GRANDBOIS
Category: Graduate student Period of stay: 2008-09 Norwegian Affiliation: NTNU Field: Economic Development Purpose of grant: Mr. Grandbois will be studying globalization at NTNU, specifically focusing on the relationships between
cultural values and technological expansion. The interdisciplinary approach of NTNU’s globalization curriculum will enable
Mr. Grandbois to study post-WWII Asian technological expansion as a case study for possible future expansion into other markets,
such as the African continent. Most recent degree/affiliation: Ph.D., University of Minnesota, Minneapolis

 |
Mr. Donald Matthew HAWKYARD
Category: Graduate student Period of stay: 2008-09 Norwegian Affiliation: National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES) Field: Biology Purpose of grant: My research will focus on the use of microparticulate diets for the enrichment of live food organisms used
in larval fish culture. Specifically, I will feed larval zebrafish with Artemia enriched with wax spray beads containing micronutrients.
I will determine if specific micronutrient levels of fish larvae can be increased and if this increase will invoke a physiological
response. Most recent degree/affiliation: Oregon State University Oregon State University, M.S.

Mr. Charles Isaac KALISH
Category: Graduate student Period of stay: 2008-09 Norwegian Affiliation: University of Oslo Field: Language and Literature Purpose of grant: My research project will focus on two basic ecocritical readings of Henrik Ibsen's oeuvre: (1) Ibsen's use of environmental
themes and natural landscapes and symbols to explore concepts of wilderness, humankind's relationship to nature and national
identity; and (2) the significance of Ibsen's work to modern environmental theory, practices and problems. My goals are to
provide insight into an environmentally enlightened, or Green, dimension of Ibsen's work, which was originally intended by
the author and has been largely underrepresented in literary criticism, and to recontextualize his writing within a historical
framework of Norwegian and American cultural relationships to the environment. I will conduct my research at the University
of Oslo's Center for Ibsen Studies and take Norwegian courses through the University's Scandinavian Studies program. Most recent degree/affiliation: B.A., University of California, Santa Barbara, CA

breast cancer data from the Norwegian Cancer Registry. Most recent degree/affiliation: B.A., St. Olaf College

 |
Mr. Ian Michael MACDOUGALL
Category: Graduate student Period of stay: 2008-09 Norwegian Affiliation: University of Oslo Field: Language and Literature Purpose of grant: Mr. MacDougall's work seeks to understand how immigration is shaping Norwegian identity. His project examines this topic
through the lens of contemporary literature written by immigrants to Norway. Most recent degree/affiliation: BA, BS, University of Virginia, VA

Ms. Ivy Ellen MCDANIEL
Category: Graduate student Period of stay: 2008-09 Norwegian Affiliation: Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology Field: Biology Purpose of grant: For my Fulbright grant, I will conduct research at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology in Bergen,
Norway. I will study the evolution and function of Hox genes in vertebrates, using the tunicate (an organism near the base
of the chordate lineage) as a model system. Hox genes are involved in laying out the major body plan of animals. Studying
the evolution of these important genes at the organismal juncture of vertebrates and chordates should give insight on how
vertebrates evolved. Most recent degree/affiliation: B.A., Scripps College, CA

Mr. Jordan Robert MERTES
Category: Graduate student Period of stay: 2008-09 Norwegian Affiliation: University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) Field: Geology Purpose of grant: Mr. Mertes will be studying at UNIS in Longyearbyen focusing his studies on remote sensing, climate change and arctic hydrology
which will supplement his current research. His past research focuses on high altitude glacial changes as related to climate
change. Most recent degree/affiliation: B.Sc , University of Nebraska, Omaha

Ms. Johanna Maria ROED
Category: Graduate student Period of stay: 2008-09 Norwegian Affiliation: University of Oslo Field: Language and Literature Purpose of grant: Ms. Roed will enroll in a two-year master’s program in Ibsen Studies at the University of Oslo in order to enact a complete
study of the Ibsen oeuvre, its contributions to the period’s nascent national consciousness, as well as its history of reception
and propagation within the United States. She will focus primarily on the impact of Ibsen’s archival work as a collector of
folktales in Gudbrandsdalen and Western Norway on his authorship. It is her hope that her research will prompt a resituating
of Ibsen within the canon of world literature, as well as a rethinking of the way Ibsen is taught in the United States. Most recent degree/affiliation: M.A., St. John's University, NY

projects to improve the sustainability of wild capture fish production. His work will focus on developing and testing a new
fishing net to catch commercial quantities of cod, haddock and saithe while reducing impacts on the seabed and the catch of
non-target species and juvenile fish. Sea trials will be conducted on both research and commercial fishing vessels in the
North and Barents Seas. Most recent degree/affiliation: Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Portland, Maine

Ms. Brooke E. WILKERSON
Category: Graduate student Period of stay: 2008-09 Norwegian Affiliation: University of Bergen Field: Ecology Purpose of grant: Forests with more structure (such as deadwood and mature trees) tend to support more biodiversity than forests with less
structure. Brooke will be researching changes in forest structure over time in Norway using the National Forest Inventory's
system of permanent plots. In the second half of her project, she will research Norway's forest policy to investigate how
changes in policy have influenced forest structure. Most recent degree/affiliation: MS, University of Vermon
