Dr. Sharman HALEY

  • Purpose of grant: Dr. Haley is working on three projects this fall: 1. a book on Arctic Oil and Gas with colleagues at UiS, and planning a new project proposal; 2. collaborating with two dozen researchers in eight countries to build a circum-Arctic data base of indicator variables on human dimensions of global change. Dr. Haley's contribution to this data base includes oil and gas activities, mining activities, and marine transportation. 3. using that data to prepare case study research on local employment effects of individual oil and gas and mining projects in the Barents Sea region, and analyzing institutional factors that differentiate local employment outcomes.

Dr. Baron KELLY

  • Purpose of grant: Dr. Kelly will travel to Norway for a residency in the city of Bergen, where he will carry out research at the International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER) Center of the University of Bergen.   The aim of the center is increase research-based knowledge about international migration, and Dr. Kelly will carry out pioneering work dealing with ethnic groups in Scandinavia and their involvement in the arts.  He will also help develop a theatre piece in Oslo to contribute to the 2008 year of multiculturalism in Norway.

Dr. Linda STROMEI

  • Purpose of grant: Dr. Stromei will be working at the University of Stavanger on both a teaching and research project. She will implement and evaluate a university wide mentoring program, using her trademarked AMIGOS program, translate all documents and instruments into Norwegian and train the university personnel to continue the program administration and data collection and analysis.  Dr. Stromei will also design and teach a course on Diversity in the Service Industry, and provide mentoring to Ph.D. students at the business school.

Professor Patricia Anne WILLIAMS

  • Purpose of grant: For her combined research and lecturing fellowship, Professor Williams plans to engage in jacquard weaving research on structure, color and finishing processes using Norwegian wools, working with equipment at Digital Weaving Norway in Honefoss. She will also lecture, conduct a workshop and participate in the Future Textile project at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts. Professor Williams also plans to interact, through lecture and/or workshop, with students and faculty in the Textile Area of the Oslo National Academy of the Arts.

Ms. Allison BAILEY

Ms. Whitney BLANCHARD

  • Norwegian Affiliation: SINTEF, Department for Marine Environmental Technology
  • Purpose of grant: SINTEF’s Marine Environmental Technology Group conducts experimental, monitoring, and modeling studies of oil and chemicals released into the environment.  While in Trondheim Ms Blanchard will be conducting research with modelers from the Marine Environmental Technology Groups developing numerical models of the fate and transport of oil in ice.  She will also be taking several courses in the civil and marine engineering program at NTNU.  This work contributes to her first year as a PhD student in civil engineering at the University of New Hampshire.

Ms. Kirsten FRISTAD

  • Purpose of grant: Ms. Fristad’s time will be split between the University of Oslo and the UniversityCentre in Svalbard (UNIS) where courses in geomorphology and remote sensing will supplement my research.  Her research utilizes satellite data and field mapping to study the link between environmental parameters and habitability at Mars analogue sites in Svalbard. This research stems from previous work with the Arctic Mars Analogue Svalbard Expedition (AMASE).

  • Purpose of grant:  Ms. Fyllingness will be doing research on tourism and cultural commoditization in the Arctic and will be affiliated with Finnmark University College in Alta. Her main study seeks to understand how cultural commoditization affects host residents in an effort to develop policies that can maintain a positive experience for both the residents and the tourists.

Ms. Laura GERBER

  • Purpose of grant: Ms. Gerber will be studying organometallic chemistry of lanthanide  metals, which are elements that have not yet been very well studied. She will be studying their basic chemistry as well as testing their ability as catalysts. This type of compound is also an important type of model compound for understanding Ziegler-Natta catalysis. This is a widely used polymerization process, but still, over 40 years after its discovery, the details of the process are not very well understood.

Ms. Kristin HOELTING

  • Purpose of grant: Ms. Hoelting will be studying the culture and ecology of salmon restoration efforts in Norway.  She is interested in how people in coastal communities and throughout Norway conceive of wild salmon several decades after the closure of commercial fisheries, along with interactions between aquaculture and wild salmon.  She will also investigate what restoration efforts are currently underway, and the federal policies and regulations that influence these efforts.

Mr. Matthew HOFFMAN

  • Purpose of grant: Mr. Hoffman’s research examines the ability of common property regimes to maintain the non-commodity benefits of agricultural landscapes (public goods such as scenic beauty, wildlife habitat, etc.).  The early part of his stay will be spent in Trondheim studying Norwegian property rights and traditions, as well as the language.  Mid-winter he will visit farming communities where common property is important; and his last 4-5 months will be spent conducting one or more in-depth case studies.

Ms. Elizabeth JENSEN

  • Norwegian Affiliation: University of Tromsø, Department of Computer Science
  • Purpose of grant: Ms. Jensen will be studying distributed systems and robotics in the Computer Science department at the University of Tromsø.  In particular, she will be designing and implementing a set of partially autonomous robots with a link to a centralized distributed system for additional computing power.  She will then test the robots on a variety of tasks, and compare her results to those of a centralized system where the robots have no autonomy.  When the robots are completely controlled by a central system, they have to maintain contact at all times, which is not feasible in many situations where robots would be useful.  By giving the robots partial autonomy, they can accomplish different tasks.  Ms. Jensen’s project will focus on the kinds of tasks for which each set of robots is best suited.

Mr. Jeffrey LUGOWE

  • Purpose of grant: Mr. Lugowe will be looking closely at the latest group of migrant workers to land in Norway: Poles. In collaboration with Fafo (Institute for Applied Social Science), he will be interviewing Polish construction workers and their families and studying the conditions under which they live and work. On top of this, Mr. Lugowe will be taking classes on migration and labor markets at the University of Oslo and studying Norwegian.

Mr. Todd OLIN

  • Purpose of grant: This research project reviews energy production technology and policy in Norway and proposes a comprehensive public and private energy policy for the United States. The resulting report first examines the present and future potential of many energy producing technologies. It then evaluates them under the four main American energy consumption sectors. The report then describes immediate and future action that can be taken to achieve economic, environmental, public health, and national security goals.

Ms. Lauren OSEN

    Purpose of grant: Ms. Osen will be studying Norway's newest and internationally unprecedented gender quotas in the private business sector.  These quotas provide that companies not abiding with 40% gender representation on their boards by 2008 will be dissolved from the Norwegian stock market.  Ms. Osen is interested in the history, effects and public opinion of this law.

Ms. Elizabeth WILEY

Through a combination of coursework and independent research, she will examine the ways in which the Norwegian health care system balances community and institutional care options for individuals with long-term care needs.
